A Space Sight course is a joint effort of AKV|St.Joost, Waag and European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC, ESA) to introduce creative and critical approach to earth observation. The course provides the students an understanding of an earth observation technologies, creative and critical methodologies for their use and hands-on opportunity to work with space data, space technologies and space experts.
Questions that are at the heart of this project are:
How can we not only create economic and (geo)political value with satellite technologies but also cultural and social value?
How do these technologies extend our vision and how is this extended vision programmed? How can we use this extended vision in new ways and in new contexts, to create extended human perceptions?
How does satellite vision mediate our experience and knowledge of our planet and our lives? How do satellite technologies impact our daily existence?
What are the ethical and political implications of satellite technologies and how can we expose these concerns?
Who owns all the data that are gathered by satellites? Who trades these data? How are they being used in different contexts for different reasons?
The course is a mix of a practical introduction to space technologies, critical thinking and creative use of space technologies. Kickoff day offers a basic introduction to space observation technologies, introduction to outer space narratives and emerging earth observation related societal challenges. Introductory day was organised at ESA ESTEC research facility in Noordwijk as a one day program, to establish the foundational understanding of space observation, serve as an introduction to the course, presentations of students project/research proposals and discussion with experts on proposed topics. Working sessions at school provide lectures on earth observation space technologies, understanding of observation methodologies, hands-on experience with a tools of space observation and insight into narratives with which space data and information are curated. Selected topics will also be adapted to the rest of the sessions, that are going to be mentored in a group and one-on-one case, so the students can get more focused insight, direct references and methodological support on how to develop their projects.
The Space Sight course is lead by Michel Gutlich and Michiel van Opstal from AKV/ St.Joost, Miha Turšič from Waag and supported by earth observation experts from European Space Agency.
